January Science with Mrs. Schultz – As we head back into classes after the extended Christmas break, students will dive into a fun activity to learn about the planets in our solar system. They will be tasked with the challenge of creating a vacation commercial with the goal of enticing their classmates to choose their planet as their vacation destination. This is a fun challenge that I look forward to teaching. Later, students will use their knowledge from the Moon Calendar activity to produce an edible moon phases assignment – stay tuned for more details on that!

January ELA – We wrapped up our final unit before Christmas with an intensive persuasive essay unit. It was enlightening and exciting to read about what students felt passionately about and the thoughtfulness with which they approached the assignment was meaningful for me to observe! Topics ranged from women’s rights to animal cruelty to arguing the best players in the NBA and NFL. We have many Justice-Seekers and God-Worshippers in our grade 8 classes! When we return to classes, students will prepare presentations on their latest independent novel study before we dive into our Short Stories unit. With classic, mind-bending texts such as Lamb to the Slaughter and Tell-Tale Heart, it is my favorite unit of the year!

January Health – In Health 8, we have been focused on healthy choices when it comes to nutrition, smoking, and alcohol. Students have learned about the harmful effects of smoking and alcohol use, as well as done some planning of well-balanced meals. Our next unit will focus on safety and safe spaces.
