    Principal’s Message:

For those of you who have gotten to know me over the years, (or for those of you who see my clothing attire most days), you know that I am an avid golfer. It is not atypical for me to get 60-80 rounds in a year, and I love the ability to get out on the course no matter what the weather (mostly!)

While I love the Creation-Enjoying aspects of it, not to mention the ability to have a few hours to myself, the last year I have really come to love the Order-Discovering of golf as well. As I have really dug into the reasoning behind why the golf ball flies (or doesn’t), it has really given me an appreciation of the math and physics behind the sport (yes, it is a sport and not a hobby).

Over the winter months, I took the game inside onto a simulator, where I started to analyze things such as swing speed, ball speed, spin, angle of attack, and smash factor. All of these items create reasons why the golf ball flies the way it does, and by changing the mechanics of a swing plane, these numbers change too. By stripping the game down to math and physics, it has allowed me to gain distance with my clubs, reduce side spin, and increase my confidence in playing the game I love.

Now I am writing this not just because I am a golf nerd and could sit and talk about these things for hours (which I do, and have), but because it shows how math and physics, which are often people’s “least favorite subjects” are actually all over God’s world. Discovering His order opens up so many possibilities in the things that we have been created to do and enjoy. When you have the chance, show this to your kids, and explain how math is all around us. It is not something to fear or hate, it is simply part of God’s fingerprints on the world.

Mini Mall is Coming! – May 18, 2023

We hope you will join us for Covenant Christian Grade 9 Mini-Mall! Our Mini-Mall has been an annual school-wide community event. It combines the Grade 9s learning in Social Studies on Economics with a fund-raising opportunity for their graduation by creating a mini-business to sell products to other students.

This year we are operating Mini-Mall in-person. You can also preview items on the Mini-Mall Market Webpage HERE with your child, you can look through the catalogue and engage in meaningful conversation about financial literacy, budgeting, stewardship, and consumerism.

The students’ products will be available on Thursday, May 18 from 10:45 to 11:45 am. Homeroom teachers will be escorting children through the mini-mall at that time. Parents are also welcome to join us at the school for this event. Tickets will be purchased through your child’s Powerschool Account. Tickets are available in books of 20 tickets for $5. Most items cost between 4-12 tickets ($1.00-$3.00). No cash will be accepted or tickets refunded. All ticket purchases must be made through PowerSchool by MIDNIGHT on May 16, 2023.

    Executive Meeting Update

The ninth Society Executive meeting for the school year was held on Monday evening, May 8. Here are some notes from our meeting:

    • CCS 40th Anniversary Homecoming Weekend – April 22/23: Thanks to all who volunteered and attended the 40th-anniversary celebrations! Our auction raised $23,500, which will be used towards our parking lot upgrade! God has blessed CCS so abundantly over the last 40 years – just imagine what He will do over the next 40!
    • AGM May 24 (save the date): We will have our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 24 at 7:00 pm. A light snack and refreshments will be provided. Also note that the grade 9 students will provide babysitting, free of charge. This meeting is a chance to hear about the past year from both the Society Executive and principal’s perspective and review and approve financial information, including last year’s financial statements and the condensed budget for the upcoming year. In accordance with our bylaws, all people who have been Society members in good standing since April 24 are entitled to vote at the AGM. Non-society members (e.g., spouses) are also welcome to attend. Society members who cannot attend may instead submit absentee ballots. Further information can be found in this edition of the Chronicle.
    • Executive positions: We will have two vacancies on the Executive next year. We will be nominating Rachelle McIvor to fill one of those vacancies. Please contact Executive Co-Chairs Karen Hofstra or Niki Underschultz, or Society Administrator Lisa Gatzke by Wednesday, May 17, 2023, if you have any objections to the nomination of Rachelle McIvor. If no legitimate objections are received, she will be acclaimed as a new member of the Executive for next year.
    • Golf Tournament June 10: Spots are filling up fast for our third annual golf tournament! Register soon to avoid disappointment! And if you don’t golf, you can still come out and enjoy the day as a volunteer. We’ll even feed you! Further information can be found in the Chronicle!
    • Call out for new members PR Committee: We are looking for members for our Public Relations (PR) Committee. The PR Committee is charged with maintaining and strengthening the relationship between CCS and our community, mainly through a number of events the committee plans, prepares, and executes over the year. Meetings are typically an hour and a half long and occur once per month. If this interests you, please reach out to our Society Administrator, Lisa Gatzke ([email protected] or 780-612-1557).

    Odds & Ends:

    Sign In/Out Form:

In an effort to reduce the amount of shared touched surfaces, we will be using a QR code that you will need to scan with your phone for signing in and out of the school. You can also use this link if you are in your vehicle and need to sign out a student but can’t scan the code. This means that students/parents/visitors can scan the QR code when entering or leaving the office/school to sign in or sign out on their own phone/device.

Parents will also be able to sign their kids out from their vehicle in the parking lot when they arrive to pick them up for appts. etc. please use the link above if you can’t scan the QR code. We do ask that parents pull into a spot (not bus lane) where they can contact the office to let them know you have arrived and we can make eye contact with you
from the staff/office door. Students must also stop by the office before leaving the school. At that point, once a connection is made, we are able to send students out to you.
