    Principal’s Message:

As I have gotten older, my attitude and thoughts on Halloween have shifted immensely. Personally, I had grown up with Halloween, and never had any severe convictions about it, other than it was a commercialized gimmicky day, that was at best a conduit for eating and acquiring copious amounts of candy.

Since I have had children, this thought process has shifted. I have come to think of how I can use Halloween to greet my neighbour. When our kids were quite little, my wife and I both took them out, staying in a true “man-to-man” defensive structure. Each of us was responsible for one kiddo, and it allowed us to all go out house-to-house, and visit with those in our neighbourhood. Now that they are a little older, a “zone defensive scheme” is a little easier to work with. My wife goes out with the kids and a few of their friends and is able to keep a general eye on them, and I stay back at home to give out the candy.

During COVID, I built a fairly cool “candy tube” and sat outside with a blanket to greet people. It was nice just seeing people, and I had a ton of fun, even in the cold weather. Over the last two years, I have once again gone back to sitting outside, because I found that it allowed me to greet more neighbours, learn faces and names, and see and talk with my community.

From Leviticus, to Matthew, to Galatians we are challenged to “love our neighbours as [ourselves]”, and my thought has been, why not take an opportunity when hundreds of people are out and around the community to see who my neighbour is? To welcome them to my (fire) table, and to share just a brief hello with them.

This thought has changed the way I look forward to the evening of October 31st. Next year, it is my hope that I come across even more than the 174 kids and families I got to meet the other night! If you are in the neighbourhood, stop on by! I’ll be there!

    Odds & Ends:

    Sign In/Out Form:

In an effort to reduce the amount of shared touched surfaces, we will be using a QR code that you will need to scan with your phone for signing in and out of the school. You can also use this link if you are in your vehicle and need to sign out a student but can’t scan the code. This means that students/parents/visitors can scan the QR code when entering or leaving the office/school to sign in or sign out on their own phone/device.

Parents will also be able to sign their kids out from their vehicle in the parking lot when they arrive to pick them up for appts. etc. please use the link above if you can’t scan the QR code. We do ask that parents pull into a spot (not bus lane) where you can contact the office to let them know you have arrived and we can make eye contact with you
from the staff/office door. Students must also stop by the office before leaving the school. At that point, once a connection is made, we are able to send students out to you.
