Principal’s Message:
Seven days into our school year, we sure started firing on all cylinders! A full five-day week, starting up five school teams, classes going full throttle, and we are even sitting today in our buddy groups for Celebration! While I know for a fact that our staff is tired – yet excited, I am sure you are feeling the same way.
Over the summer, we were talking to some friends about how the end of August is always filled with hope and excitement. You begin making lists and calendars, and perhaps get into the exercise routine you have been planning on, organizing, and meal prepping. Yet, in September, things start moving – QUICKLY. All of those things you had planned get put aside for sports teams, birthday parties, piano lessons, clubs, family photos, fantasy football/hockey, etc. All of the time you thought you had, can just feel like it disappears.
One thing that I want to challenge you to do this year is to eat at your kitchen table with your kids. Despite the crazy schedules, despite the ease of the island, despite the lure of the TV, eat at your kitchen table with your family. Talk about their day, talk about your day, pray before your meal, take time with each other, and enjoy each other.
I know that this is easy to say, and difficult to do – The Simmons family admittedly struggles with this! But with that said, as I have been researching and planning for our school theme; “The Stable Table,” the research on the positives of creating and keeping this habit is overwhelming. From academic scores, nutritional benefits, lowering at-risk teenage behaviours, spiritual wellness, to even positive moods, the results of doing this one habit repeatedly is shown in the data.
As we move into the crazy season, let’s slow down at suppertime, even if it is only for a few moments.
Announcements:
Terry Fox Run
On Wednesday, September 28th, all families are invited to come and cheer on CCS Students as they take part in the Terry Fox Run. This will be a whole school event that will take place immediately following our morning Celebration. If you are interested in donating or fundraising, please visit our school fundraising page. https://schools.terryfox.ca/5605.
Celebration
We hold weekly assemblies, which we call Celebration. We alternate between Wednesday and Thursday mornings each month so our kindergarten students are each able to join us every other month. We will hold Celebration on Wednesdays for the month of September. All parents are welcome to join us each week!
Hot Lunch
We are excited to once again offer a weekly Hot Lunch Day! This year, Hot Lunches will be on Wednesdays.
We would like to make you aware of some changes:
1. The KFC meals will no longer come with a juice box, please order your child a drink in addition to the meal if they would like one.
2. Two new restaurants have been added to our program this year; Mucho Burrito and Panda Hut Express.
3. We are bringing back Hot Dog day in a different way; on our Booster Juice weeks we will be offering just smoothies and booster bakes from the restaurant and also hotdogs, (no pop or chips) our regular drinks, and fruit cups to go with them.
4. If you are interested in volunteering for our Hot Lunch program (commitment level can be very flexible) please contact our office Hot Lunch Coordinator, Gloria Horvath at [email protected]!
You can find the forms for Hot Lunch in your students’ PowerSchool account. Orders will close on the Tuesday prior to the following week’s hot lunch at 11:59 pm. All orders must be placed online, and payment must be made with form submission to be processed. (No cash or cheques are accepted). Please check your email for a confirmation receipt to ensure that your order went through.
Our first Hot Lunch for this year will be Wok Box which is scheduled for September 21 and will close on September 13 at 11:59 pm). The form for this lunch, as well as the following week, Sept 28, which will be Subway, are available on PowerSchool to be completed.

Learning Commons is OPEN!
This week I am excited to re-open the Library Learning Commons!! Your child will likely bring home one or two library books in their book bag. This bag is to be used by your child to store his/her library books for the school year.
Please encourage your child to keep their books in the library bag when they are not being read. This helps to avoid accidents, such as damage due to food, pets, water, siblings, etc. If a book does become damaged, or you notice torn pages, please remind your child to return it directly to me so I can do my best to repair it.
Destiny is the software used within Black Gold School Division’s libraries. If your child has overdue books, a notice will be sent via email. This is automatically sent every Monday at 8 am. If you receive an email that you think to be in error, please contact me at: [email protected] and I will look into it. Thank you for your help and for encouraging your child to use the library!
Looking forward to another great school year!!

Junior High Retreat
We are excited to be able to once again go on our fall Junior High Retreat! This is for all students in grades 7-9 and we will be looking for some parent volunteers to join us. We will travel out to Sunset Point at Alberta Beach (September 14 & 15) for two days of community building! If you would like to join us on this amazing adventure, you will need to submit a recent (within the last 12 months) Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Intervention Check. Apply NOW as it can take quite some time to receive the paperwork back. Please contact the office for more details on how to apply for these documents.
Permission forms and fees for this field trip are now available on PowerSchool under Student Fees and Forms to be completed. Payment MUST be made at the time of completing the form in order for your permission form to be processed.
Lost & Found
We will post weekly pictures of our lost and found. If you see something that is your child’s, please have them stop by the table and pick it up or let the office know.

Sign In/Out Form:
In an effort to reduce the amount of shared touched surfaces, we will be using a QR code that you will need to scan with your phone for signing in and out of the school. You can also use this link if you are in your vehicle and need to sign out a student but can’t scan the code. This means that students/parents/visitors can scan the QR code when entering or leaving the office/school to sign in or sign out on their own phone/device.
Parents will also be able to sign their kids out from their vehicle in the parking lot when they arrive to pick them up for appts. etc. please use the link above if you can’t scan the QR code. We do ask that parents pull into a spot (not bus lane) where you can contact the office to let them know you have arrived and we can make eye contact with you
from the staff/office door. Students must also stop by the office before leaving the school. At that point, once a connection is made, we are able to send students out to you.
