PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

There’s something about an Edmonton Oilers playoff run that changes the atmosphere around us. You see it in the streets—jerseys everywhere, car flags waving, and faces painted blue and orange. You hear it in the buzz of conversation—at school drop-offs, grocery store lineups, and Sunday morning coffee time. Whether you're a lifelong fan or just along for the ride, it’s hard not to get swept up in the energy.

And honestly, it’s beautiful.

It’s beautiful to watch a city come together—laughing, high-fiving, maybe pacing nervously during overtime—and all sharing in something that feels a little bigger than just a game. It reminds us that we were made for connection, that community matters, and that it’s good to celebrate together.

But as with anything good, there’s a balance to be found.

It's easy for the excitement to shift into obsession. To care a little too much. To let a win lift our spirits a little too high—or a loss sink us too low. That’s where we need to pause. Because while hockey is fun (and let’s be honest—playoff hockey is really fun), it’s not everything. It can be a great joy in our lives, but it’s not meant to be the centre of our lives.

When we keep that in perspective, something amazing happens. The Oilers become more than just a team—we see them as a spark that brings people together. It becomes about the friends we gather with, the laughter we share, the lessons we teach our kids about loyalty, perseverance, and gracious wins or losses.

And for those of us who follow Jesus, it can even be a glimpse of what it means to live in Christian community—united in purpose, celebrating together, and walking through ups and downs side by side. When our joy in sports stays rightly ordered under our joy in Christ, we find space to love our neighbours, grow closer to one another, and maybe even cheer a little louder—knowing it’s all part of a life lived in fellowship.

So wear the jersey. Paint your face. Celebrate the goals. But more importantly—notice the people around you. And give thanks for the moments, big and small, that remind us that we’re better together.

Let’s go Oilers!
